We live in a world where our devices rarely rest—and neither do we. The pings, alerts, meetings, and notifications don’t just drain our phone batteries; they drain us.

As leaders, educators, and professionals in the virtual space, we often feel the pressure to always be available. But being always “on” doesn’t make us more effective. It makes us exhausted. And in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s time to shift that narrative.

💡 Why Unplugging Matters

Mental health is more than just a buzzword—it’s the foundation for how we think, feel, and function. And constant connectivity takes a toll on that foundation.

Zoom fatigue. Burnout. Disconnection from self and others. These are all symptoms of a life lived behind screens without intentional pause.

Stepping away from the virtual world, even briefly, can restore our energy, reset our minds, and reignite our creativity. When we log off, we make space to truly light up from within.

🔄 Signs You May Need to Step Back

You don’t need a major crisis to press pause. These signs are your gentle reminders:

  • You feel drained after every interaction—even the fun ones

  • Your mind is foggy and your creativity feels “flat”

  • You check emails or messages late at night... and first thing in the morning

  • You struggle to be present with people or moments that matter

  • You feel overwhelmed, but can’t pinpoint why

If any of those sound familiar, it’s time for a reboot—for you.

🧘‍♀️ How to Step Away and Recharge

Here are simple, effective ways to protect your peace without dropping your productivity:

  1. Schedule Screen-Free Time Daily

Block off 30 minutes to walk, cook, read, or sit in silence—no phone, no laptop, no pings.

  2. Set Virtual Boundaries

Let your team or co-workers know when you’re stepping away. Add it to your calendar or use status settings like “focus time.”

  3. Use the 20-20-20 Rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It reduces eye strain and mental fatigue.

  4. Designate One “Unplug Day” Weekly

Choose one day (or half-day) to disconnect from work platforms. Go analog and let your nervous system breathe.

  5. Reconnect Intentionally

Nature walks. Journaling. Conversations without screens. Laughter without filters. These are the things that refill your spark.
